Songtsm Travel Hotel Jiuzhai: A Fusion of Nature and Heritage in a High-Altitude Village

Nestled atop a 3,000-meter high ridge in Jiuzhaigou, China, lies a distinctive micro-village comprising merely eight timber cabins. This site, recognized as China's smallest administrative village, appears suspended against the vast sky, intimately coexisting with drifting clouds, towering fir trees, and rugged rocky terrain. The objective of the Songtsm Travel Hotel Jiuzhai project, helmed by Thinking Design, was to meticulously transform this exceptional location into a serene resort. The core design philosophy transcended mere "renovation," instead embracing a profound concept of "recalling." This approach focused on rekindling the latent memories embedded within the landscape, drawing forth the vibrant essence hidden within the mountain forests and age-old timber, and unearthing the temporal narratives etched into the layered mountainscape. The intent was to breathe new life into weathered wood, allow ancient structures to re-emerge with renewed purpose, and enable mountain springs to resonate once more, ensuring that each fragment of venerable timber found its way back to the slopes, and every fissure recounted tales of wind and time.
The transformation journey of this high-altitude village into a travel hotel by Thinking Design was deeply rooted in reverence for its natural and historical context. Instead of imposing a new architectural vision, the architects sought to amplify the existing spirit of the place. This meant a meticulous preservation of the original wooden cabins, integrating them seamlessly with contemporary comforts while ensuring their rustic charm remained intact. The natural elements – the serene mountain forests, the robust ancient timber, and the murmuring springs – were not merely backdrops but integral components of the design, each contributing to an immersive guest experience.
The project emphasizes a cyclical relationship with nature, where materials like aged wood are not discarded but celebrated and repurposed. This commitment extends to the overall aesthetic, which is minimalist yet deeply expressive, allowing the raw beauty of the surroundings to take center stage. The integration of sustainable practices and a thoughtful approach to land use further solidify the hotel's connection to its pristine environment, offering guests a unique blend of luxury and natural immersion.
This innovative resort, with its eight distinct wooden cabins, provides an unparalleled retreat where visitors can reconnect with nature's tranquility and the rich cultural tapestry of the region. The design philosophy ensures that every structural detail and natural feature contributes to a cohesive narrative, inviting guests to experience a space where history, nature, and modern comfort converge harmoniously, creating a sanctuary that echoes the whispers of the mountains and the enduring legacy of the land.
