The Russian River Valley, renowned for its lush vineyards, majestic redwood forests, and agreeable climate, provides an idyllic backdrop for this expanding winery.

The vision for this expanded Auteur Wines establishment was to encapsulate the winery's celebrated relaxed and inviting atmosphere while fully leveraging the splendid natural environment. The result is a 3,000-square-foot structure perched on a hillside, offering panoramic views of newly cultivated vineyards. Its understated, residential-scale design prioritizes a profound connection to the location, ensuring year-round adaptability and comfort for diverse group sizes. The building features a subtle shed roof that gently follows the land's contours, extending outward to provide ample shade. A winding entrance leads to the main facade, characterized by an opaque limestone wall with limited openings, allowing diffused light to enter through a clerestory. In contrast, the rear facade boasts a transparent 50-foot-long window wall, offering expansive views of the surrounding landscape. Inside, visitors discover a main tasting area, a cozy lounge with a fireplace, a private tasting room for exclusive guest experiences, offices, wine storage, and a catering kitchen.

Sustainability and energy efficiency were paramount in the project's development. The building incorporates both passive and active environmental strategies, including a 24-kW solar array on the hillside that powers most of the facility, with only the fireplace utilizing propane. Thoughtful landscape interventions address stormwater management through native, drought-tolerant plants and bioswales. The Red-Shingled Haven: A Deep Dive into Cucu Cabin's Design and Ethos

Buckeridge emphasized the client's desire to diverge from the prevalent standardized cabin hospitality, advocating for a design that actively engages with its landscape rather than merely existing within it. The cabin's unique tapered form, enveloped in red-stained shingles, evokes the rustic charm of local agricultural structures and metallic roofs, creating a visual dialogue with its environment. Inside, Cucu's square footprint ingeniously accommodates a cozy seating nook, a functional kitchen, a warming log-burning stove, and a discreet toilet and shower room concealed behind a sliding door. A ladder ascends to a tranquil sleeping area on a mezzanine level, where a circular window frames captivating views of the surrounding natural beauty. Subtle touches of red in the window frames and tiling inject vibrancy into the plywood-lined interior, while a custom roll-top copper bath on the outdoor deck provides an indulgent touch. Buckeridge's design draws inspiration from Ireland's historic tower houses, evident in the cabin's vertical layout and the intimate sensation of inhabiting elevated spaces. This architectural nod to tradition, though not literal, translates the essence of verticality into a contemporary form, allowing occupants to feel as if they are 'sleeping in the sky' while remaining firmly rooted in place.
