Menard Dworkind Crafts Dual-Concept Dining Experience in Toronto

Experience Culinary Duality: A Toronto Gem Unveils Contrasting Yet Harmonious Spaces
Innovative Design for North of Brooklyn's Eighth Location
The latest iteration of North of Brooklyn Pizzeria, their eighth outlet, finds its home in Toronto's Etobicoke district. This venue is notable for its two distinct levels, each offering a unique ambiance. The lower level is dedicated to a vibrant, tiled takeaway service, while the upper floor transforms into a refined and cozy bar environment.
Menard Dworkind's Vision: Blending Functionality and Aesthetics
The architectural studio, led by Guillaume Menard and David Dworkind from Montreal, finalized this 2,550-square-foot establishment in April 2025. The compact ground floor, which also houses the kitchen, presented an opportunity for a bold and direct design approach, prioritizing durability and visual impact.
Ground Floor: A Robust and Visually Striking Takeaway Zone
The studio aimed for a design that was both assertive and graphically appealing, capable of withstanding the heavy foot traffic from takeout and delivery services. The ceiling in this area features an illuminated grid system, providing diffused light. The walls, counter, and other details are adorned with custom-molded tiles from the Dutch company DTILE, presented in soft cream and deep chocolate hues. These bespoke tiles extend seamlessly from the walls to the ceiling, even incorporating outward folds to create practical hooks for merchandise displays, thus blurring the boundaries between surfaces and fixtures.
Upper Level: The Intimate and Tactile Low Rise Bar
Transforming a former apartment with limited ceiling height, MRDK created the Low Rise bar on the upper floor. To enhance the natural illumination, new windows were integrated into the west facade, allowing ample light to reflect off the mirrors positioned on the east side of the room. The objective for the upstairs area was to cultivate a more personal, inviting, and sensory environment, where guests could enjoy exceptional food, atmosphere, and design with effortless comfort and distinctive character.
Refined Details and Italian-Inspired Aesthetics
The mechanical infrastructure on the upper level is cleverly concealed within a glossy bulkhead that encircles the space, providing a sharp contrast to the elevated central ceiling. Here, cove lighting accentuates the texture of the dark popcorn ceiling. This 40-seat dining area draws inspiration from a nostalgic Italian design, reimagined with a contemporary flair. Walnut tables are custom-fitted into window recesses and cantilever from the walls, complementing the dark green leather banquettes featuring folded steel feet. The impressive bar is faced with a tumbled marble mosaic, topped with a zinc counter that is designed to develop a rich patina over time. An In Common With fluted pendant light fixture casts a warm, inviting glow throughout the space.
