Complementing this, a fireplace adorned with green ceramic tiles anchors the space, while a Mex Cube sofa in a harmonizing shade and an Utrecht armchair in royal blue provide both comfort and visual interest. Throughout the apartment, oak parquet flooring provides a consistent, warm foundation. Custom-designed elements like bookshelves and a television cabinet, along with navy kitchen cupboards and a sage green kitchen, further highlight the architects' commitment to a fluid and colorful aesthetic, creating inviting spaces for entertaining guests or simply unwinding after a long day.

Transitioning from the communal vibrancy, the sleeping quarters are designed for quiet contemplation and rejuvenation. The main bedroom employs a soothing palette where navy blue is the most pronounced color, complemented by subtle black and white accents. A captivating Glamora wallcovering adds depth behind the bed with delicate pastel tones, a theme echoed in the guest bathroom's bolder, more graphic scheme. The en-suite bathroom combines contemporary terracotta surfaces with acid green resin, creating an unexpectedly cozy and inviting atmosphere. Custom features, including the washbasin, mirrors, and a walk-in closet, enhance the personalized feel, while a freestanding tub serves as an explicit invitation to relax and decompress. Embracing a lifestyle shift, DJ Louise Chen, now a mother, embarked on a journey to revitalize her Parisian residence. Situated in the 9th arrondissement, her 753-square-foot apartment, with its distinct layout, presented a unique challenge: to evolve from a bachelorette pad to a warm, inviting family dwelling. Architect Cyrus Ardalan, noting the apartment’s intricate structure reminiscent of a ship’s interior, spearheaded a design transformation rooted in nautical elements.

A key aspect of this redesign was the strategic manipulation of light and material. The living room already benefited from ample natural illumination, while the connecting hallway remained dim. Ardalan addressed this by extensively incorporating dark plywood, carefully calibrating panel height and placement to prevent a cramped sensation, leaving a subtle white border at the ceiling. The incorporation of 'ship doors' and 'porthole' cutouts ingeniously channeled light into previously shadowed areas, enhancing the apartment's overall brightness and flow. Furthermore, the existing parquet flooring was painted white, contributing to the maritime aesthetic while offering a practical, low-maintenance solution. The porthole windows in the bedrooms, featuring a sliding shutter mechanism, ingeniously balanced light transmission to the hallways with privacy for the rooms.

Ardalan maintained a restrained color palette throughout the interior, focusing on the interplay of wood and tile. Rich, reddish-brown tiles in the bathroom echoed the wood paneling, creating a sense of continuity. In the kitchen, the introduction of cool stainless steel complemented these warmer tones. An arch adorned with cream-colored ceramic tiles served both a structural purpose, concealing load-bearing elements and old pipes, and an aesthetic one, defining the space and framing a transom window that further facilitated light distribution within the apartment. The furniture selection emphasized timeless design and functionality, with classic pieces like an Alvar Aalto table, Eileen Grey chairs, and Charlotte Perriand wall lights adding character. A contemporary Nordic Knots rug and a custom cabinet designed to house Chen’s vinyl collection seamlessly blended modern sensibilities with the homeowner's personal history, creating a truly bespoke and harmonious living environment.
