Club Marginal Architekten Transforms Historic Berlin House for Modern Family Life

In the historic district of Friedrichshagen, Berlin, an 1891 semi-detached residence, known as Friedi & Hagen, has undergone a comprehensive transformation by Club Marginal Architekten. The project meticulously balances the preservation of its original architectural character with the demands of contemporary family life. This extensive renovation involved both structural enhancements and a thoughtful reorganization of interior spaces, breathing new life into a protected urban conservation area. The design philosophy centered on respecting the building's past while adapting it for future generations.

A significant aspect of the renovation involved the complete reconstruction and expansion of the attic. By adding dormers, the architects successfully increased the usable area on the upper level, transforming previously underutilized space into functional living quarters. Externally, the facade was carefully restored, with new windows featuring the original cross-bar design, reinforcing the building’s historical appearance. Various architectural details were also reintroduced to enhance the property’s historic composition and scale, ensuring it harmonizes with its surrounding heritage.

Internally, the middle floor was thoughtfully redesigned to create a dedicated children's zone. Each child's room now features a mezzanine level, offering versatile spaces for play and additional occupancy. These rooms are complemented by private bathrooms equipped with integrated, vibrant orange-toned furniture, adding a touch of modern flair. This innovative spatial arrangement introduces vertical layering, optimizing the use of space while maintaining a seamless flow between built-in elements and circulation pathways, fostering an environment that is both playful and practical.

The uppermost attic level has been transformed into a private retreat for the parents. This sophisticated area includes a spacious master bedroom and an expansive adjoining bathroom, complete with a sauna. The design of this private sanctuary is defined by a refined material selection, primarily featuring oak veneer and travertine. A striking freestanding vanity serves as the central focal point, while storage units and cabinetry are seamlessly integrated into the surrounding wall paneling, ensuring spatial continuity and a minimalist aesthetic. This thoughtful integration enhances both functionality and visual harmony.

Throughout the residence, the newly installed flooring systems contribute to a cohesive material narrative. A combination of oiled pine and linoleum surfaces has been used, establishing a consistent and harmonious material language across the entire renovated interior. This strategic choice not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also ensures durability and ease of maintenance. Club Marginal Architekten's intervention in this historic residential structure masterfully integrates restoration efforts, spatial reconfiguration, and material selections, creating a modern family home that respectfully acknowledges its rich past.

The overall redesign by Club Marginal Architekten demonstrates a profound understanding of historical preservation combined with a forward-thinking approach to modern living. The project seamlessly blends traditional elements with contemporary design, creating a residence that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The emphasis on natural materials like oak and pine, alongside the strategic use of travertine and linoleum, contributes to a warm and inviting atmosphere. Every detail, from the reinstated facade elements to the custom-built interior furnishings, reflects a commitment to quality and thoughtful design, ensuring the home will serve its inhabitants comfortably and beautifully for years to come.
