Avant-Garde Jianhu Bookstore: A Waterfront Cultural Transformation

Reimagining Heritage: From Industrial Utility to Cultural Landmark
A Lakeside Transformation: From Waterworks to Cultural Enclave
Nestled on a small island within Shaoxing's picturesque Jianhu Lake, this architectural marvel began its life in 1992 as a vital municipal water intake facility. Comprising six distinct buildings—a pump house, substation, administrative office, staff dormitory, water intake pier, and cargo dock—the site was solely dedicated to water management operations. However, with the completion of a larger regional waterworks in 2001, the island gradually fell into disuse, its purpose fading into obsolescence. It remained a dormant relic until 2022, when a visionary revitalization project breathed new life into its forgotten structures, aligning with local initiatives for rural development and cultural tourism.
Architectural Symbiosis: Blending Old and New Functions
The core of this transformative project lies in its thoughtful conversion of the original infrastructure. The former pump house now houses a captivating bookstore, while the substation has been ingeniously repurposed into a charming café. The administrative building now serves as an engaging exhibition space, and the staff dormitory has been reimagined as a serene viewing pavilion. Even the water intake pier and cargo dock have found new utility as a welcoming boat dock, facilitating public access to the island. These diverse functions are elegantly interconnected by a new flat-roofed corridor system, supported by slender steel columns. This addition not only creates a cohesive flow between the disparate buildings but also forms a fresh organizational pattern for the entire site. The previously enclosed and utilitarian island has thus been reborn as an open, inviting public realm, offering visitors a unique blend of cultural enrichment and natural beauty.
